Sustainable Incontinence Facts

Did you know that disposable incontinence products take up to 500 years to decompose and breakdown in landfill? In other words, the nappies and sanitary products we are using today will still be decomposing in the year 2500. It is almost hard to imagine how many generations will have lived or how humans will have evolved in that time however we do know that they are not going to be pleased if they are cleaning up waste from the beginning of the century. Sure, a few nappies are not the biggest problems the world is facing right now, however just imagine 450 thousand tonnes of incontinence products going into Australian landfill each year! This may make you realise that the problem is not that small either and, if we widen the lens a bit more to a global scale the problem is big enough to want to do something about it.

The stress this is putting on landfill is only one part. What about emissions and our carbon footprint? We also need to be thinking about all sorts of issues like contamination and the possible spreading of bacteria and viruses because there is so much untreated human waste that can not biodegrade naturally, that it may contaminate the earth and soak into the ground water.

This problem isn't going to correct itself naturally. We need to educate ourselves so we can make better choices. There are currently 4.8 Million Australians living with incontinence and a lot of studies showing that Incontinence will increase by 2020 to around 6.5 million people creating more emissions and a lot more waste. We don't even know enough about these issues and the consequences they will have on our future planet.

Incontinence pads, sanitary products and nappies result in around 450,000 tonnes of landfill waste in Australia each year, placing a huge strain on landfill sites and contributing to large amounts of carbon emissions. Significant amounts of water and energy are used to make regular disposable incontinence products with large volumes of pulp, paper, plastic and other raw materials being used in the manufacturing process. The manufacturing of these products contributes to many problems for the planet including deforestation, non-sustainable sourcing, energy waste and pollution on a large scale.

What is Holistic doing about it?

We are dedicated to a sustainable future and we will be introducing our new “Eco Softness” range a more eco-friendly disposable adult incontinence product that will be available to purchase at the end of 2015. Our products are made predominately from natural plant based materials and sustainably sourced wood pulp making them more biodegradable and also reducing carbon emissions. Holistic Incontinence is committed to protecting our environment and reducing the impact incontinence products have on the planet. We also care about saving Australians money and our eco range will be no different. Our promise is to keep the products very affordable with only a slight increase in price from our Allusive range.

We are passionate about finding sustainable solutions and reusable products and we personally believe sustainability is the only future for incontinence products. We are currently testing and prototyping better semi-disposable and biodegradable incontinence products as well as washable/reusable options that you will see launched in 2016. Our new washables will be far superior to any other washable product and only a fraction of the cost. We also have innovative ideas for cleaning and reusing these products so they are favourable and more user friendly. We are also focusing on creating community awareness so people can make smarter choices. We also understand that not everybody wants eco friendly products and if you prefer conventional types like our Allusive range you can be at ease knowing that all profit is going towards research for better stainable products and incontinence management programs.

This is the 20th century and we believe that it should not be left to one government or one large international company, nor is it the responsibility of the individual. Our planets future can only be protected by everyone working as “one” together to create awareness and make better choices and hopefully in this lifetime we will see fully sustainable products supersede conventional types along with a huge reduction in the number of people living with incontinence because this is after all the solution that will relieve the strain and suffering.
